Concurrent Session 7

Brief Abstract

Derek Snyder, an Associate Professor at University of Hawai'i Maui College, will share how his college has been supporting their UHMC students and the entire Maui island community since the wildfire disaster.  A short presentation will also provide background about UHMC's unique and long history with distance learning, how distance education continues to play an important role in access to higher education for those students impacted by the wildfire disaster, and how hyflex class approaches may be the key to allowing students to continue forward with their educational goals while simultaneously helping them to heal from the trauma of this devastating disaster.  Various ways attendees can continue to assist UHMC students and Maui residents through relief efforts will be shared as well.  After the short presentation, there will be brainstorming table discussions to further explore your ideas and experiences regarding how we as institutions and individuals can best support our students and communities during these types of humanitarian crises.
