Adaptive and Personalized Learning with Alternate Reality Courses
Alternate Reality Courses (ARCs) are a novel way of teaching and learning that combine simulations, games, instruction, and narrative with the latest pedagogical techniques. ARCs are designed with immersive and interactive stories that learners live through, making decisions and receiving feedback along the way. ARCs apply the principles of deliberate practice to create groundbreaking practices for online education. In this session, you will get to play an ARC game and learn how this new modality of learning can transform teaching and learning and improve outcomes.
The session will begin with a brief introduction to Alternate Reality Simulations. You will then play a short interactive game to gain firsthand experience of this learning modality in which you will receive expert instruction, interact with in-game various characters and videos and get a chance to put what you learn into practice. Your choices will shape your story and affect your outcomes.
After playing the game, we'll discuss our design and build process and share the conceptual, narrative, and pedagogical choices behind the design of every ARC game. You will discover how ARCs can provide engaging and effective learning experiences that are tailored to each learner’s needs and goals and make teaching easier and more effective.
