Linking Distance Learners to Innovation Labs: Bridging the Gap with Location-based Technologies in Higher Education

Concurrent Session 3

Brief Abstract

Higher education institutions have established innovation labs to adapt to technology while promoting creativity and collaboration. However, as these labs rely on location-based technology, students enrolled in online/hybrid programs may experience limited engagement and accessibility. This paper addresses the challenge of designing an inclusive learning environment while fostering innovation.

Extended Abstract

Topic of the Session

Many higher education institutions (HEIs) have created or expanded their “innovation labs” to adapt to the widespread adoption of technology. A learning lab is “a physical, digital and human space for observation, experimentation and evaluation…(it) is an incubator of pedagogical innovation and digital learning structured on three dimensions: spaces, activities and communities” (Sanchez et al., 2021). These labs are popular in IHEs due to their potential to foster innovation, creativity, and collaboration of learning. While they have the potential to engage students effectively, most of the technology tools are location-based, resulting in a loss of student engagement and accessibility for students who are enrolled in online or hybrid programs in the institution. This session highlights the challenges of designing and maintaining an effective learning environment as they relate to creating a culture of inclusive learning while fostering innovation.

Plan for Interactivity

  1. Participants will discuss their experience with innovation labs in their organization (success/challenges)
  2. Small group discussions from case study of innovation labs at institutions that have online/hybrid degree programs and distance learners
  3. Hands-on activities: The session facilitator will demonstrate technology tools such as AR/VR headsets and mobile technology kits that can be used at the institution
  4. Participants can apply what they have learned in the session to fit the needs of their own organizations and institutions

The Takeaways

By the end of this session, the participants will:

  1. Articulate the concept of innovation labs in higher education institutions (IHEs) and their potential to foster creativity and collaboration using the available technology.
  2. Identify the challenges associated with location-based innovation labs and their impact on student engagement in online/hybrid degree programs.
  3. Create strategies for designing and maintaining an inclusive innovation labs that promotes accessibility for all students, including students enrolled in online and hybrid programs.
